Love the post Sarah and love your commentary on it Bennet. I truly believe this, with my heart and soul, parenting G through the crazy maze of food. A healthy does of reality and real life thrown into the diabetes. I find the more choices I give my 7 year old, the more she is comfortable making good choices on her own. I would love to raise a child with diabetes, not a diabetic child.

Great post, Bennet. Sarah indeed has it right. Nowadays, kids have that freedom and choice that really wasn't around before pumping become common - I grew up with the meal exchanges and had to pretty much go off a base from the insulin doses in morning and evening. Glad that kids have the opportunity now to enjoy those "eating like a kid" without going overboard or being unhealthy. Of course, exactly correct in saying: Food is so incredibly nuanced, as is everything about diabetes. After 26 years myself, everyday is an adventure!

What a really beautiful post. Living successfully with diabetes is truly an art form. Integrating all the science into the foundation of our real lives is how we learn to balance. Sarah's kids are really lucky to have such a wise mother. She is helping them build a fantastic foundation to support them healthily for the rest of their lives. Bravo!

Or, put another way - stop the terrorists! which is what I think the insurance companies and politicians who are in bed with them are. hmmm. terrorism - instilling fear amongst the masses, threatening life and liberty, destroying economic stability. yep - sounds like the insurance industry to me.

I'm a few years late to this post, but glad to find it and your blog!
Michael Chabon has a book out you might like - Manhood for Amateurs (about fatherhood - not diabetes-related, but very funny and thoughtful).
My husband and I share our son's care, and I'm actually the needle-phobic one, so have some catching up to do on set changes. :)

IF nobody warned you keep an eye out for lows these first few weeks. Some folks have a little resistance to injected insulin at first. As a result they need a tad more. Then their body get used to the stuff and presto they go low cause that tad more is well more than they need.

If you haven't found it yet look up TiDiabetes.com. Good place for you to meet some others working with T1.

I'm twenty-one and was just diagnosed with Type 1 last week. I was in the hospital for six days, it wasn't very pleasant, but I'm glad to know what was wrong with me.

It's a whole lot to take in, but it's rad to see this kind of outlook on the disease. The misconceptions and misinformation blows, especially when us Type 1s are the rarity.

My daughter was 8 at dx and gave herself her first shots in the hospital the first night. She has been doing it all herself since. I do remember the first few years, she's 13 now, I did all the clean up because I didn't think she had to do that. So I put the insulin away, put the syringe in the sharps box, etc. One interesting side story about cgms. When we first started my other daughter named the monitor "Carl". Doing so has made a subtle change. I now ask her "how's carl lately?" and she calls me to rag that "carl is acting up today, I am so cross!"

MAC USERS BEWARE - This meter's software does not work with 10.6.x and I can't get it to work with 10.5.8 either. Called support and after two transfers was told it was a technical problem (as if I didn't already know that) and would have to be escalated to the tech team which does not work weekends. They are calling me back on Monday Feb 8; well that's their commitment. If I get it working, I will post the "HOWTO".
