ADA's Your Rights Blog

ADA has announced the launch of the blog series:Your Rights, One Voice (Diabetes Discrimination Stories) on the American Diabetes Association Blog: DiabetesStopsHere.orgEach month the blog will feature a different story about diabetes discrimination and how the person affected received help after contacting the American Diabetes Association (through our Legal Advocacy Program).

The first story is about Collin Wadian of Massillon, Ohio, a high-school student who has type 1 diabetes and Down’s syndrome. Read Collin’s story and learn how Collin’s Mom, Joan, now feels that he has the “best and safest possible care when he attends school.”

Look for the Your Rights, One Voice story each month onDiabetesStopsHere.org!

Help Duane Reade Give $100,000

One of my kids lives is NYC. Another is going to college there in the fall.  I have come to like Duane Reade stores from my visits to the City. Deane Reade is looking to make some charitable contributions in exchange for Facebook likes. I am OK with that. After liking them you can vote on how the funds get distributed. My friends at the ADA are one choice.

I am a big fan of the ADA. I am an ADA trained Safe at School advocate. I think ADA does great work all around. I have said before that Your Advocates Should Vary. I think ADA sure deserves a few clicks. Goto http://www.facebook.com/duanereade. Like Deane Reade and vote for our friends at the ADA.

Proud of the Kid

Connor spoke at the American Diabetes Association's Greater Philadelphia Area Chairmans's Reception the other day.

Did a nice job.

Proud of the kid, even if he is not much of a kid any more.

Voices of YDMV.

I am honored to be a guest on Just Talking this week.  Christopher and I had a great time talking and I probably got over passionate about my favorite BBC Top Gear episode (Hint: Trying to Killing a Toyota Truck.) I may have been as interested in community support, the DOC, #DSMA and why I follow @SStrumello on twitter or maybe not. Have you seen that Top Gear?

I think PodCasting is brilliant. The first diabetes online resource I followed was DiabeticFeed. That feed is on hiatus for the spectacularly wonderful grounds that chasing around a toddler is serious work. Fortunately Just Talking, DSMA Live and other shave stepped up to the plate with podcast production. Good thing. I couldn't do it.

Also sharing the voice of the YDMV household is my former toddler and now tall young adult Connor. He spoke to a group of potential corporate sponsors of ADA’s Tour de Cure  in the packed conference room of a very prestigious law firm in downtown Philly this morning. Closing the presentation, he took the scary statistics and made them a both positive and personal. He was optimistic and appreciative of the support networks, including advocacy groups and their corporate sponsors, that make it possible for people to pursue dreams in their lives with diabetes.

Sadly the Tour is the day of Connor high school graduation or we would ride.

Connor did a fantastic job if I do say so myself. And in case independent no aligned testimony is required, a partner in the firm told Connor he would make a great litigator and the executive director of the local ADA chapter wants him back at other events. I rest my case.

FTNW: Medtronic Research

When Medtronic held their social media summit in April one of the topic of conversation was the wealth of data that the CareLink system creates. An obvious question is how is that data studied and is it open to folks outside the big M.?

Today Medtronic with ADA announced such studies. These are anonymous, hippa compliant uses. You can read more at the ADAlink:

Rx: Kiss-a-Pig

That is official medical advice. Well in so far a doctor suggests, well actually request, it.

The doctor in question is Andreas Stuhr. He is about as nice a guy as I've met and a real good sport. He did a bit for theBetesNOW in German only come to think of it now, I have no idea what he said...

Rumor has it he's been walking around the office in a pig costumer drumming up support for this fund raising event. Nobody should get away with behavior like that without their friends mocking them on the internet. I have spies trying to get pictures and I will post them when and if I get them.

In them mean time, if you are so inclined, join me in chipping in a little.

theBetesNow Sighting

We are just back from Orlando. After FFL we had a little fun games and fireworks. We come home to see that one of theBetesNow.com videos we made at Friends For Life is featured on the American Diabetes Association's home page. WoHoo!

theBetesNow is by and for people living with type 1. Our goal is to share short often humorous bits that are not Charlie Brown's teacher. You know, "Wa Waa Wa WAA Wa wa Wa WA."

Maybe an example will help:

Thanks ADA for joining in with a little less frivolous bit on school safety, I grabbed a screen capture just to have  a souvenir.
